Description
Which printers take this part?
Eight machine variants take this tank: the HP DesignJet Z6 24-in, Z6 44-in, Z6dr and Z6 Pro, and the HP DesignJet Z9⁺ 24-in, Z9⁺ 44-in, Z9⁺dr and Z9⁺ Pro. PSE’s Studio 24 Pro and Studio 44 are built on that Z6 platform. The 746 range is the one 300-ml family HP lists against both.
What Matte Black does on this platform
Matte Black is the black your printer uses on uncoated and matte stock; Photo Black is the one it uses on coated and glossy. Both blacks live in this machine at once, and the media type set in the driver decides which one the printer draws from — you do not pick it per job. So a Matte Black tank emptying faster than the rest is telling you something useful: most of your work is running on matte paper rather than coated.
Size, and the larger Matte Black tank we carry
This is the 300-ml size. The one bigger Matte Black tank we carry is 1XB12A, the 776 Matte Black in a 1-liter tank, and per milliliter it costs less than this cartridge. HP lists the 776 range for the Z9⁺ only, so that saving is open to a Z9⁺ owner and not to a Z6 owner — on a Z6 this 300-ml cartridge is the Matte Black you order. Current pricing for both sits on their own product pages.
Don’t order this by mistake
Three parts sit close by. P2V82A is 746 Photo Black — same family, same size, the other black, meant for coated stock. P2V25A is the 746 printhead, not a tank. And the whole 747 range is also 300 ml yet carries no black at all, and HP does not list it for the Z6 series.
Two blacks, six colors, and what sits above them
This is one of two blacks in the 746 set, which is why a Z6 or Z9⁺ holds a Matte Black and a Photo Black side by side. The full range is six tanks — Matte Black P2V83A, Photo Black P2V82A, Magenta P2V78A, Yellow P2V79A, Cyan P2V80A and Chromatic Red P2V81A, all 300 ml — plus printhead P2V25A. A Z6 runs those six colors and no others. A Z9⁺ adds the four-part 747 extension: Gray, Chromatic Blue, Chromatic Green and Gloss Enhancer. Above 300 ml, a Z9⁺ takes the 776 tanks, mostly 1-liter.

Questions schools ask about this part
Which black do I order if we print on both matte and glossy paper?
Both. Matte Black P2V83A and Photo Black P2V82A sit in separate slots, and the printer draws from whichever one the driver’s media setting calls for. A school running mixed stock keeps both on the shelf.
How many prints will one cartridge produce?
Coverage, media and image content move that figure by a wide margin, so we do not publish a per-cartridge poster count. The front-panel ink-level readout reports what your own jobs actually consume.
Is the 1-liter matte black cheaper?
Per milliliter, yes — 1XB12A works out cheaper for the same color. But it is a 776 tank and HP lists that range for the Z9⁺ series only, so a Z6 cannot take it; on a Z6 the 300-ml P2V83A stays the part to order.
