Read the machine before you read the color

HP lists the 738 range for the DesignJet T850, T850 MFP, T870 and XT870, and the 738M range — yellow at this size is A24VPA — for the T870, XT870, XT950 and XT950 MFP. On a T850 or T850 MFP, 738 is the only one of the two HP lists; on a T870 or XT870 both appear, so order the number your printer’s supply display asks for. HP does not list 498N7A for the XT950 or XT950 MFP.

Yellow on this platform

Yellow does double duty on a four-color machine. It prints as itself in signage and school colors, and it sits under the greens, oranges and browns the printer mixes. Schools running a lot of mixed secondary color often find yellow empties first — the front-panel ink levels will tell you whether that is true of your own jobs. A genuine HP tank of this number is recognized by the printer as soon as it goes in.

What the 300 ml yellow saves

At $117.95 for 130 ml you are paying $907 a liter. The 300 ml yellow, part 676M8A, is $224.95 — $750 a liter, 17% less per milliliter.

One digit away is a different tank entirely

The 130 ml run reads 498N4A, 498N5A, 498N6A and this one. Carry on to 498N8A and it is no longer yellow or 130 ml — that part is the 300 ml black. One letter away, the 738M yellow at this size is A24VPA at $117.00.

The label on our empty tank is scuffed. How do we identify the part before ordering?

Your printer’s front panel reports low supplies by their HP number; read the number it asks for and order that range. If it asks for 738, this is the yellow in the 130 ml size. If it asks for 738M, the yellow at that size is A24VPA. When the panel is unclear, call 866-788-7900 with your model.

We run a T870. Do we order 738 or 738M?

HP lists both ranges for the T870 and the XT870, so both appear in HP’s list for your machine: 498N7A is the 130 ml yellow in the 738 range, A24VPA is the 130 ml yellow in the 738M range. Order whichever number your printer’s supply display asks for. We cannot confirm from HP’s published compatibility list that the two are interchangeable on a T870, so if the display is ambiguous, call 866-788-7900.

Is 498N8A simply the next yellow up?

No. 498N8A is the 300 ml black. The 300 ml yellow is 676M8A.
