HP 738 130-ml Magenta DesignJet Ink Cartridge (498N6A)

Fit: T850 and T870, not XT950

This magenta is listed by HP for the DesignJet T850, T850 MFP, T870 and XT870. Nothing in the XT950 family takes it. Worth checking before the requisition goes in, because the two ranges look almost identical on paper and their numbers differ by a single letter.

Where magenta sits in a four-color set

Poster Studio Express stocks this series in four inks — black, cyan, magenta and yellow — so on a 738 machine magenta carries more of the warm and purple range than it would on a six- or ten-color poster platform, which is why a low magenta shows up in skin tones and school-color fills.

130 ml or 300 ml

Part 676M7A holds 300 ml of the same magenta and works out roughly 17% cheaper per milliliter. The 130 ml tank still earns its place when magenta is not your fastest-moving color and you would rather not tie up shelf space, or budget, in the larger size.

Adjacent part numbers to watch

A24VNA is the 738M magenta at this size, with the printhead built into the cartridge. HP lists it for the T870 and XT870 as well as the XT950 family, but not for the T850 — so on a T850 it is not an alternative to 498N6A. On a T870 or XT870 both series appear in HP’s list; call 866-788-7900 before substituting one for the other. The 738M magenta at 300 ml changes prefix entirely, to 676N0A.
