Description
Where 676M7A belongs
This is HP’s magenta for the DesignJet T850 and T850 MFP and for the T870 and XT870. Those four machines are its listed printers; the XT950 line is not among them. Read the model off the asset tag before a requisition goes in, rather than assuming a part carried over from the unit it replaced.
What the magenta channel does here
Magenta is used in most full-color prints, so it can deplete at a rate similar to cyan. The 300 ml size reduces how often that replacement comes round.
The four magentas, and why one letter decides which you need
Magenta exists four separate times across this platform generation, and the part numbers do not run in an order that helps you. On the 738 side, this cartridge is the 300 ml and 498N6A is the 130 ml; both are listed for the T850, T850 MFP, T870 and XT870. On the 738M side — one letter away, and a cartridge that carries an integrated printhead — 676N0A is the 300 ml and A24VNA is the 130 ml, and both are listed for the T870, XT870, XT950 and XT950 MFP rather than the T850.
So the T870 and XT870 appear on all four. A T850 or T850 MFP appears only on the 738 pair. An XT950 appears only on the 738M pair. Reading 676N0A off an old invoice when the machine is a T850 is the specific mistake this page exists to prevent.
Per-milliliter comparison
Against 498N6A, the 130 ml magenta for the same four printers, the smaller cartridge costs roughly 21% more per milliliter at current list prices. That gap holds across every color in this range, which is why a site printing steadily tends to standardise on the 300 ml.

Questions schools ask about this part
We reorder from last year’s invoice. Is that safe here?
Only if the printer has not changed. 676M7A is listed for the T850, T850 MFP, T870 and XT870. If a machine has since been replaced with an XT950, the magenta you need is a 738M part — 676N0A at 300 ml or A24VNA at 130 ml, whichever size the print room prefers. Check the model on the asset tag before the requisition goes in.
Which goes down faster, this magenta or the cyan?
Magenta is used in most full-color prints, so it can deplete at a rate similar to cyan. We do not publish a per-color consumption pattern for a specific workload, because that depends on what your school prints. The 300 ml size is the lever you have: it reduces how often either color needs replacing.
