HP 738M 300-ml Black DesignJet Ink Cartridge (498Q0A)

What this part is

HP part 498Q0A is the 300-milliliter Black tank in the 738M range — a genuine HP cartridge, ordered by HP’s own part number, supplied as one tank.

Which printers this cartridge fits

HP part number 498Q0A — genuine HP 738M 300-ml Black, one cartridge. HP lists the 738M range for two machine groups:

• HP DesignJet T870 / XT870
• HP DesignJet XT950 / XT950 MFP

It is not listed for the T850 or T850 MFP; those take the plain 738 range, so a 738M tank ordered for one of them is the wrong part. Printer bought under a PSE package name? Ring us with the serial number.

What the black channel does on this platform

Black is the only black in the 738M set: no Photo Black, no Matte Black, so the driver has nothing to switch between. Every rule line, every heading and every dark area of every poster comes from this one tank, whatever paper is loaded. Our 738M catalog holds no gray, chromatic or gloss-enhancer tank.

Tank size and value

The 300-ml tank holds 2.3 times the ink of the 130-ml tank, part A24VLA — the same Black in the same range. Compare today’s two shelf prices: if black empties first on your machine, the larger tank is usually the cheaper ink per milliliter.

Do not order this one by mistake

498N8A is the 300-ml Black in the plain 738 range: same size, same color, different machine list. And 498N0A, one character away, is not ink at all — it is the HP 739 printhead replacement kit. Read the full code off the tank first.

The whole 738M range in our catalog

Questions schools ask about this cartridge

Is 738M the same thing as 738?

No — two ranges with two machine lists. The plain 738 covers the T850 and T850 MFP plus the T870 and XT870; the 738M covers the XT950 and XT950 MFP plus the same T870 and XT870.

My old box says 498N8A. Can I order 498Q0A instead?

Only if your printer is on the 738M list above. Both are 300-ml Black tanks, which is why they get mixed up. Call us with your model before you order.

Do I still need to buy the 739 printhead kit?

HP’s own materials are not consistent on this point for the XT950. We are confirming it with HP and will not guess — call us before ordering a printhead kit.
