Order 498N5A for a DesignJet T850, T850 MFP, T870 or XT870. The XT950 and XT950 MFP are not on this cartridge’s compatibility list — they take a 738M cyan instead — so if your asset tag reads XT950, this is the wrong tank.

What 498N5A is, and what it is not

This part is ink and a tank, nothing else. On a 738 printer the printhead is a separate component already fitted in the machine, and it stays in service on its own schedule after you change the cartridge, so swapping 498N5A does not reset the cyan nozzles. If color shifts or streaking appear right after a change, run the printer’s cleaning cycle before concluding the new cartridge is at fault. The 738M cyans — A24VMA at 130 ml and 676M9A at 300 ml — are the parts that carry a printhead inside the cartridge. 498N5A does not, and on a T850 or T850 MFP it is the cyan the machine expects.

Cost per milliliter against the larger cyan

Part 676M6A is the same 738 cyan in a 300 ml tank, and it works out cheaper per milliliter than this one — compare the two current prices before reordering. If your school empties a cyan cartridge inside a term, the larger tank is the one to price up; if one lasts a school year, the 130 ml is the easier line on a purchase order.

A24VMA is the 738M 130 ml cyan with an integrated printhead, and 676M9A is its 300 ml counterpart. Both list the XT950 and XT950 MFP as well as the T870 and XT870, so on a T870 or XT870 check your machine’s own supplies label before ordering across series. The 300 ml cyan in the 738 range is 676M6A.

Questions schools ask about this part

We fitted a new cyan and the output has faint streaks. Is the cartridge faulty?

Usually not. On a 738 machine the printhead is separate from the cartridge and stays in the printer, so changing a tank does not reset the nozzles. Run the printer’s printhead cleaning routine and reprint before treating the new cartridge as the cause.

Is 676M9A the 300 ml version of this cyan?

No. 676M9A is a 738M cartridge with an integrated printhead, and it lists the XT950 and XT950 MFP as well as the T870 and XT870. The 300 ml cyan in the plain 738 range, the one that matches this cartridge, is 676M6A.
