Paper, Explained

Finish & Weight, Without the Jargon

Two things decide how a poster looks and lasts: its finish (the surface) and its weight (the thickness). Here's what to know.

Finish: matte, coated, satin & gloss

The finish controls glare, color punch, and readability.

  • Uncoated / matte (standard): no shine, zero glare, lowest cost — best for text-heavy, everyday posters.
  • Coated: a smooth chemical coating that boosts color and sharpness while staying low-glare — the school all-rounder.
  • Satin photo: a soft, pearl-like sheen — photo quality with far less glare than gloss, ideal for reading walls.
  • Gloss photo: maximum shine and vibrance — stunning under good lighting, but reflective under direct light.

Weight: how thick & durable

Heavier stock feels more premium, curls less, and lasts longer.

  • 24 lb bond: standard everyday weight — light, economical, perfect for high-volume printing.
  • Coated (4 mil): a touch sturdier with a protective surface for posters that hang all year.
  • Photo (7–8 mil): thick, premium feel that lies flat — satin and gloss photo paper.
  • Heavyweight & luster: the framable, archival tier when a print needs to look the part.

Good news: coated and photo papers are instant-dry and need no lamination. Banner and vinyl media are durable by design.

Common Questions

Poster Paper FAQs

For most classroom and hallway posters, coated poster paper is the best all-around choice — it delivers rich, sharp color, dries instantly, and costs about $2.84 per 24″×36″ poster. Choose satin or gloss photo paper for photos, PolyPro banner for indoor banners, and outdoor vinyl for exterior signs.

For posters meant to be read on a wall, coated or satin finishes are best — they show strong color with low glare under classroom lighting. Glossy gives the most vibrant pop and is great for high-impact displays, but it reflects light, so avoid it for text-heavy posters near windows or overhead lights.

Use a photo paper — satin (8 mil) for natural skin tones and glare-free viewing, or gloss (7 mil) for maximum vibrance. Both are instant-dry and need no lamination, so framable student photos and portraits look professional right off the roll.

For indoor banners (gym, hallway, pep rallies), use Indoor PolyPro banner — tear-resistant and available in 100 ft rolls. For anything outside — field signs, fence banners, car-line graphics — use Outdoor banner vinyl, which is UV-stable and weatherproof.

A full-color 24″×36″ poster runs about $1.55 on standard, $2.84 on coated, $5.84 on satin photo, $6.45 on gloss photo, $7.65 on indoor PolyPro banner, and $13.05 on outdoor vinyl (ink + media). Every media type is sold by the roll, so the per-poster cost is the roll's material price ÷ the 24″×36″ prints it yields, plus ink. Our PrintCents™ tool shows the exact cost before you print. Usually not. Coated and photo papers are instant-dry and smudge-resistant, so they hang as-is. For high-traffic or wet areas, choose a durable media like polyester film, poly cloth, or vinyl instead of laminating — it's tougher and faster.

24 lb bond is the everyday standard — light and economical for high-volume printing. Step up to 4 mil coated for year-round posters and 7–8 mil photo for premium, lie-flat prints. Heavyweight and luster stocks are the framable, archival tier.

Yes — every roll is made for wide-format school poster makers and comes in 24″, 36″, 42″, and 60″ widths to match your printer. Just choose the width that fits your machine. See the school poster makers →
