HP 746 300-ml Chromatic Red DesignJet Ink Cartridge (P2V81A)

Which printers take this part?

HP lists this cartridge for the DesignJet Z6 24-in, Z6 44-in, Z6dr and Z6 Pro, and for the DesignJet Z9⁺ 24-in, Z9⁺ 44-in, Z9⁺dr and Z9⁺ Pro. The Z6 machines are the ones behind PSE’s Studio 24 Pro and Studio 44.

About HP 746 Chromatic Red

Chromatic Red is one of the six colors in the HP 746 range, supplied as a single 300-ml cartridge under its own part number, P2V81A. It is the only chromatic color in that six-tank set; the other chromatics, blue and green, sit in the 747 range that HP lists for the Z9⁺ series alone. This page is the single-cartridge listing.

Don’t order this by mistake

Three part numbers on this shelf carry the word chromatic and only one of them is red. P2V81A is the red; P2V85A is 747 Chromatic Blue and P2V84A is 747 Chromatic Green, and HP lists both of those for the Z9⁺ series only, so neither is a part a Z6 can use. Chromatic red and magenta are different parts too — P2V81A and P2V78A.

Specifications

Bulk options for larger volumes

Chromatic red is also made in a larger tank, and the larger the tank the lower the cost per milliliter. That part is 1XB10A, the 776 1-liter chromatic red, which HP lists for the Z9⁺ series — it is not a tank a Z6 can take, and on a Z6 this 300-ml cartridge is the chromatic red. Current price and stock are on its own page: HP 776 1-liter Chromatic Red (1XB10A).

The rest of the 746 range

The other five colors are P2V78A magenta, P2V79A yellow, P2V80A cyan, P2V82A photo black and P2V83A matte black. The printhead is a separate part, not a color: HP 746 DesignJet Printhead (P2V25A). Everything listed for each machine sits in its own category: HP DesignJet Z6 ink and HP DesignJet Z9⁺ ink.

Questions schools ask about this part

Is chromatic red the same as magenta?

No. They are separate cartridges with separate part numbers: magenta is P2V78A, chromatic red is P2V81A.

Does P2V81A fit a Z9⁺ as well as a Z6?

Yes. HP lists it for the DesignJet Z6 series and for the DesignJet Z9⁺ series. The 747 chromatic parts, P2V84A and P2V85A, are listed for the Z9⁺ series only.

Could we run the printer without the chromatic red installed?

Install a cartridge in every slot your printer’s front panel asks for. If a slot is empty and you are not sure which part it takes, call 866-788-7900 with your model number.
