Which printers take this part

HP part 3ED70A is the 38-milliliter black in the HP 712 range. HP lists it against the DesignJet T210, T230, T250, T630 and T650 printer series; of those we stock 712 ink for the T650, 24-inch and 36-inch. If the tank you are replacing does not say 712, read its number before ordering.

Black is the only ink here sold in two sizes

The three colors come one way only, 29 ml, whether as singles (3ED67A cyan, 3ED68A magenta, 3ED69A yellow) or in three-tank cartons. Black is the exception: 38 ml here, 80 ml as 3ED71A. Nothing else in the range has a size choice, and the smaller black still holds more ink than any color tank.

What the black tank carries

There is one black here, not the matte-and-photo pair the HP 746 range splits into for the larger Z-series machines. It does the type, the borders, the barcodes and the near-blacks inside a photograph: on a timetable or a science-fair board, most of the ink on the page. With a single black, a spare on the shelf is the only fallback.

38 ml against 80 ml

Same ink, same printers; only the quantity differs, and per milliliter the 80-ml tank is the cheaper — the price on each page shows the current gap. Two of these come to 76 ml, still less ink than one 3ED71A, on two requisition lines instead of one. The 38 ml commits less at once, and suits a machine whose work is mostly color.

Don’t order this one by mistake

3ED70A sits on the seam between the colors and the blacks, so both neighbors get typed by accident. One digit down, 3ED69A is the 29-ml yellow, where the color run ends. One digit up, 3ED71A is black as well, same printers, 80 ml rather than 38. There is no black three-pack: the cartons are colors only, 3ED77A, 3ED78A and 3ED79A.

Genuine HP ink and the separate printhead

An original HP supply, not a compatible or remanufactured tank; the box holds one cartridge and nothing else. The printhead is a separate class of part on these machines, with its own number and its own replacement schedule: the HP 713 DesignJet printhead for the T650. Genuine HP ink helps protect it.

Is this the same black ink as the 80-ml cartridge?

Yes. 3ED70A and 3ED71A are both HP 712 black for the same printers; the difference is volume, 38 ml here against 80 ml there.

Do the color tanks come in 38 ml as well?

No. Cyan, magenta and yellow are 29 ml only, as single tanks or three-tank cartons. 38 ml and 80 ml are black-only sizes in this range.

Can I buy the 38-ml black in a carton of three?

No. The three-packs here are cyan, magenta and yellow. Black is sold a tank at a time, at 38 ml or 80 ml.
