HP 712 80-ml Black DesignJet Ink Cartridge (3ED71A)

Which printers take this part

HP part 3ED71A is the 80-milliliter black cartridge for the HP DesignJet T650, in both the 24-inch and 36-inch widths — the machine list HP publishes against this part number. If the number printed on the tank you are replacing is not 712, read that number before ordering: it belongs to a different cartridge family.

The high-volume black on this shelf

Of the eight HP 712 parts we stock, black is the only color we carry in two sizes, and this is the larger one. Cyan, magenta and yellow come in 29 ml only, as singles or in three-packs, so black is the one tank here you can buy ahead in quantity. HP points the 80-ml black at text-heavy posters, banners and signage — the work that goes through black far faster than it goes through color.

Don’t order this one by mistake

One digit down, 3ED70A is the 38-ml black for the same printer: same color, same machine, less than half the volume. It is the part a school lands on most often when reading a number off a tank in a hurry. We stock no black three-pack either — the three-packs on this shelf are colors only, 3ED77A cyan, 3ED78A magenta and 3ED79A yellow, and none of them substitutes for black.

Reorder questions on the 80-ml black

Can I use the 80-ml black in place of the 38-ml?

Both are HP 712 Black for the HP DesignJet T650; the difference is volume, 80 ml here against 38 ml in 3ED70A. Your printer prompts you when a replacement is needed.

Do you sell black in a three-pack?

No. On this shelf the three-packs are cyan, magenta and yellow; black is sold as a single cartridge, at 38 ml or 80 ml.
